With Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years quickly approaching it’s important that we plan ahead and begin thinking of effective ways to gather and socialize with friends and family while keeping everyone safe. COVID-19 is showing no signs of slowing down right now but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate the holidays together; we just have to get creative. So in an effort to make lemonade out of lemons. I’ve come up with a few options and tips that could be useful and reduce the spread of Covid during the holidays.
Virtual Gathering
The best option is to quarantine and limiting your exposure to loved ones as much as possible. A Virtual group call with family and friends is a great option if you’re someone who’s comfortable with technology and do not mind substituting face to face visits this holiday season.
If you still would like to cook and share a meal, you could prepare a plate and do a contact-less meal drop off to your loved ones before the call.
Having or Going to a Gathering
1. Determine the risk
If travel plans are to be made, make sure to 14-day quarantine before travel and upon return home. Also, determine if the risk of exposure to your loved ones is worth it.
2. Keep it small
Limit the number of attendees to reduce the risk of exposure. Less is more.
3. Keep it short
Shorten the duration of your gathering to a few hours instead of an all-night event to reduce risk of exposure.
4. Social distance
Have your guest maintain 6 feet distances. Avoid greeting with hugs or kisses. Wear your mask when you’re not eating or drinking.
5. Hand Hygiene
Give your guest personal hand sanitizers and encourage hand washing frequently.
6. Air Flow
Consider having your event outdoors (bonfire style) or crack windows to increase air circulation.
7. Food Handling
Have a designated server to make plates and consider using canned beverages, paper plates, and plastic utensils to limit cross contamination of serving utensils/dishes.
